Improved solid waste management in Al Fayhaa with the support of MedCities

On March 20-23rd MedCities participated in the technical mission of the project "Improved wasted management in Al Fayhaa", implemented by different Catalan institutions in partnership with UNDP and the support of MedCities.

The objective of the project is strengthening capacities for social stability in vulnerable communities affected by the Syria's crisis by supporting basic services delivery for vulnerable Lebanese and Syrian population. Local authorities are often carrying the burden of the influx of displaced population, which represents a huge pressure on local services provision.

Waste management experts from different institutions participated in the assessment of the situation in the four cities of the Urban Community of Al Fayhaa (Tripoli, El Mina, Beddawi and Qalamoun) in order to implement sorting at the source initiatives. The delegation had also the opportunity to visit the new sorting and composting plant built in Tripoli and to draw recommendation for making it fully operative.

The total budget of the action is 730.000€ and will be implemented during 2017. MedCities is thus fulfilling one of its mission articulating decentralized cooperation among members, since the Municipality of Barcelona and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona are among the partners of the project as well as the local authorities of Al Fayhaa.
