Pioneering Urban Actions on Accesibility in Tangier and Tetouan

On 2^nd April 2019, the final event of the ACCÉS TANGER-TÉTOUAN project was held in Tangier, with the aim of promoting the exchange of knowledge on accessibility policies and good practices in Mediterranean Cities, exposing the opportunities and responsibilities of the local authorities on promoting accessibility in urban public spaces and facilities. This seminar was also an opportunity to present the results of the ACCESTT project including the tools and pilot projects, developed under the coordination of MedCités and the leadership of the municipalities of Tangier and Tetouan, co-financed by Barcelona City Council.

Migration and Inclusive Cities - UNHABITAT

Migration, especially forced migration, is one of the defining phenomena of the century. Millions of people have fled armed conflicts, persecutions, natural disasters, and/or economic hardships in recent years. Excluded from the urban advantages that they are seeking in cities, migrants, particularly the most vulnerable ones, are often stigmatized as a problem rather than recognized for their energy and potential contribution to urban life.

Sustainable development is a complex issue, but a simple concept: it is about making sure that our economic growth allows us to maintain a model that produces fair outcomes for all of humanity; and about ensuring that humans don't consume more resources than the Earth has to offer. To do this we also need to gear all our science, our financing, taxation, and our governance towards the achievement of the SDGs.

	PROJECTS RevActe: Tunisian cities networking for climate and energy transition RevActe is a project under the leadership of the National Agency for Energy Management in Tunisia (ANME), implemented by Ide-e and MedCities.
	PROJECTS Capitalising on process in Sustainable Urban Mobility As part of the Interreg-MED Urban Transports Community (UTC) activities, MedCities together with Codatu organized the deployment a one-day TechCamp, in the framework of the event CIRCLE/SMILE2019 in Nicosia (Cyprus).
	PROJECTS First step towards Coastal Protection Strategies for Cadiz, Malaga and Almeria The Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) launched a project to design Coastal Protection Strategies with MedCities involvement.

FAIC Conference on 'Cities and Cultural Heritage. Ideas and best practices for the Adriatic and Ionian Region'

In the frame of the AI-NURECC initiative, the Forum of the Adriatic and Ionian Cities (FAIC), operated by the Municipality of Ancona, organized the workshop "Cities and Cultural Heritage. Ideas and best practices for the Adriatic and Ionian Region", in Mostar (BiH) on April 2019. It was an outstanding opportunity for the capitalisation of urban projects and the development of common initiatives. The conclusion emphasised the crucial role played by cultural and historical heritage in tourism, by stimulating integrated and innovative solutions.

EDITORIAL

Addressing Climatic Change in Mediterranean Cities: Water – Employment – Migration Challenges

Comprehensive development approaches are replacing traditional sectoral schemes. This is also the case in Mediterranean regional cooperation strategies. Very recently, MedCities participated in Rome in the Water – Employment – Migration Task Force, led by the Union for the Mediterranean under the UfM Water Agenda. This initiative seeks to find complementarities on the three topics, apparently unrelated and lacking a single vision. The environmental challenges the Mediterranean is facing cannot be addressed without bearing in mind the economic perspective, in particular related to circular economy, and the consequences that instability might bring in terms of displaced population.
Thinking this complexity as a whole helps bringing innovative approaches to situations that have been damaging the region for decades. This new thinking requires the voice of local authorities to be heard in order to complement and interact with other relevant actors such as ministries and economic actors. Without a local perspective, the implementation of tangible solutions remains blurred. MedCities raises this voice hoping that a better interaction of actors will lead to concrete projects benefiting the population of the region.
